Mike's Musings

I'll be posting my musings from time to time on various subjects some just because I feel like it, others because I'm mad, still others because I want to make the world a better place. Now that the "d" is done, it's time to move on to other things. I'm reminding myself that life is just too short to focus on just one thing.

I'm making the switch...sort of...

Well, a few posts ago, I told you I'm going back to school. Well, I've discovered that after 8 intense weeks of classes that my work laptop which I was using to do my classwork on was getting slammed with all kinds of spyware crap! Well, since I'm supposed to be the hardware support guy, I decided it was time to look into a Mac as a replacement instead of a PC. I ordered one and so far, I'll say I'm impressed. It's fast, stable, it's got pretty good graphics and the best thing it works with my new digital 26" LCD display that I got this past summer (which didn't work with my PC even though it had a DVI card)! My only gripes so far are that the keyboard and mouse leave much to be desired (I miss my ergonomic keyboard/mouse), and that there isn't Microsoft Access for Mac, and for some odd reason, it won't work with my cable modem (Hopefully I'll get it fixed before new year's.). Other than that, I'm enjoying my time on my Mac (I'm even writing this entry from it). Since I'm the tech support "guru" for the computers at the company I work for, I'll never be rid of windows, but, I really do like how my Mac works.

Update: I plugged in my ergonomic keyboard/mouse and they work fine. I've installed Virtual PC for MAC and installed Access and that works even faster (with an emulator, no less) than on my 3ghz PC! I've been doing everything to avoid calling Belkin and Apple about the wireless, but I'm almost to that point (you know us guys, we have to exhaust every other avenue before we'll ask for directions...lol)

So why is this better than a PC? It is difficult to input information and you can't get to the web very easily through the cable modem. Sounds like it is only good for writing letters and balancing the check book.

Actually, I can use my ergonomic keyboard/mouse, I just have to get that stinkin' driver from M$ to use all the functionality. But it is working as is, I've just got to re-orient the keys a bit. The cable modem issue, now that's something else. My buddy has the same modem and I plugged in my new mac and it worked fine. I guess I'm back to doing my normal hardware diagnosis. It's a great mac, though!

The reasons I've found Mac's better than a PC--
    1. Harder for spyware/adware to get loaded on a Mac since you have to enter a password anytime something tries to write system files.
    2. Only .1% of the viruses are written to attack Mac's, 2% are now targeting Linux and the rest...well you know where they attack, don't you?
    3. Since Apple controls both the heardware/software, you don't have compatibility issues like on a PC.

That's just from having it for 3 days. I'd think other folks that use multiple platforms could say what the advantages are.

So I don't have MS Access native on a mac, I've installed it using Virtual PC and it runs fine.
